Ridin'

Confession. Hands down my all time favorite vehicle is an old Chevy pick up truck. However, I have never had the honor of driving, or even being in, one.
That was until today.
Imagine my surprise when pulling up to a friend's house and I see the beauty. Oh what joy!
Upon entering the house I said, "I know you want me to drive your truck." The answer, "Of course."
It was better than I dreamed.

Firecracker.

Plans.
They change. Simple as that. Plans are just plans. In other words, what one is working to make happen. But the unexpected always rears its head.
A change in the excepted is not bad, but many times it’s frustrating, well, because things are not going the way I wanted, thought, or hoped.
But the change of plan could be just what God has in line...His way of working, of urging me to trust HIM, and showing me that He has it, even when, especially when, I do not understand or know what is happening. He wants a deeper relationship with me and moves in ways to show me what He has. Is it easy? Of course not. Admitting that I do not know is never easy. But it IS simple. Trusting that He has it, that He knows and being at peace with that and not allowing it to make me light up like a firecracker.

...........

An adventure is unfolding that, Lord willing, I will be on for the rest of my life...An adventure of wonder, hopes, hard times, sweet moments, family, sacrifice, dreams, growing, sanctification, learning, helping, forgiveness, and joy. An adventure that only God could design and sustain one between a man and a woman.

The adventure called:
Life and Love
I would be the woman.
And he would be the man.

Ponderings and Wanderings

...of my heart.
Psalms 40.
Two verses that I have made my prayers.
The first---a promise that was made by God to me from ages past, but are the whispered cries to my Savior.
"Withhold not thy tender mercies from me, O Lord: let they lovingkindness and thy truth continually perserve me."
The second---a statement that I long to be able to say to the Lord without a single doubt to it truly being true.
"I delight to do they will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart."

Which is it?

Are you really brave if you show courage when others are around but run for your life when no one else is there?
For example, and just for example. If for instances, you atempt to kill two 6-foot-long snakes when other people are watching, even though they are hissing like crazy. But you bolt if you, by yourself see one cowered in the corner a couple days later?
Bravery or pride? This is the question.
And remember, its just an example.

Longing...

...for home.

Words in a text message shocked me this morning.
A friends of mine's mom found out this week that she has a horrible sickness. I don't know the lady myself...not even her name, but I have been putting her at the feet of my Savior all morning. A Savior who knows her name, agony, and soul.

I have yet to respond to the text message.

I read these words a little while after....

"Heaven is not here, it's There. If we were given all we wanted here, our hearts would settle for this world rather than the next. God is forever luring us up and away from this one, wooing us to Himself and His still invisible Kingdom, where we will certainly find what we are so keenly looking for."

Words from a Stranger.

Its a Saturday morning and I am cleaning my brother's room. Every now and again it needs a good cleaning to make sure no new fungi have grown. I am rewarded nicely by said brother, so no complaints there. As I am going through a mountain of books {a love of reading. one of the many characteristics my brother and I share}, I receive a text message from a friend, "Wanna go grab some lunch?" I reply with an affirmative. She comes by, asks a sister to go along and we get in the car to make the decision as to where to go.
A "quick service" place it is. We order our food, arriving at different times at our said table. It is lunch hour and the place is hopping. I sit next to my friend, my sister sitting across the table. She holds out her hands to both of us, and my friend thanks God for friends and food...two joys of life. Once she finishes, a man sitting at the next table with a lovely lady and three young children leans over and says,

"Thanks for showing my kids that big girls pray too."

um...why?

Some may have wondered, "why?" when they read this post that I wrote last week where I said that I had left Mexico. I could say so much in response to that question. I could explain....
*All the things I learned there.
* The conversations that I had.
* The time I spent with my Lord, growing in my relationship with Him and in the knowledge of Him.
* The hardships that have been faced. [And by no means would that be the bathroom experiences. Those where great pleasures. Seriously.]
* The friendships I made.
* The opprotunities I now have before me.
* The longings of my heart.
...yes. I could explain all that. But then I would only be explaining the how the Lord brought me here to Georgia again, not the why.
The why. His name is Erick. A shy young man. He lives in a moderate size town in the US of A. In my backyard, you could say. Today we did his homework together, stopping ever now and then to talk about whatever. We finished, joined the rest of the group of kids, sang "Happy Birthday", shared some cupcakes, and he went on his way with his mom.
While I had been talking with him, I stepped back and took a mental picture and thought, "Would I ever have believed that I would be here at this time and in this place?" The answer was a clear "No." and a "Thank You for doing things that only You can do, Lord."
Why the appearance of over-dramatization on my part, you might ask?
Because we shared that time together speaking Spanish.
Dreams, prayers rather, do come true when the are from the Lord.

Pulled

Have you ever tried walking two dogs at once? Its a crazy task. Get them all hooked up, they cross back and forth, twisting thier leashes and ending up going in two totally differnt directions.
I was in the middle of all that today when I looked up and stopped suddenly. I saw a reflection of myself in the window. Arms and legs spread wide, steaching as far as they could go in opossite directions. I was being pulled, but going no where. And I looked like an idiot.
And oh how that must look when I do the same thing when I attempt to live my life to please people. All strung out in different directions but going nowhere.
Oh to live life only seeing eternity and not get pulled from one side to the other!
"He leadeth me in the path's of righteousness for HIS name's sake."

Hast mostla.

We emerge from the wooded path into a clearing. There sits a little wooden house. The door stands open and two children stop their play, staring at the strangers that had just happened upon their home. Greetings where exchanged all around, and then a few words in a language unknown to me.
We walk up to the next home and enter the kitchen. Three very dear ladies are there, grandmother, mother, and daughter. Our greetings with them are filled with more warmth. Strong hugs and kisses on each cheek. Others are there as well, and formal greetings are exchanged once again. Then a few more words are said, again, just sounds that register nothing in my mind. They all stood up suddenly, walking down the hill to their bedroom. We all take seats, as their neighbors, the people we had just talked to moments before, begin to fill in. We begin to sing. Every now in then, David translates what is happening into Spanish, and I in turn translate to my sister Ashlyn. We sing from our hearts with praise to the Lord. We sing "Open the eyes of my heart Lord" and David asks Ashlyn and I to sing it in English. David shares from the Bible, and afterward we have a time of prayer.
We go back up to the kitchen to share a meal togther. We laugh and carry on, my friend Ana fills me in on what is happening. We had discovered this home only two weeks before, when those ladies trusted Christ. We are told that it is time to go. We go around the room, hugging the ladies and barely touching the fingertips of the men.
Ashlyn and I make it outside first. We walk quickely for a little ways, then stop, looking at each other. Tears fill our eyes.

We had shared our lives with those people. Yes, only over a few short weeks, and always with a translator or two, but we loved them and we knew that they loved us.
But we also knew that we would never see them again in this world. We were leaving. Leaving to go back to the country that we came from, with no expections of ever returning to that small clusters of homes, hours from any real town, in the middle of the mountains of Mexico.
We had shared our lives with them, but now we share, the LIFE, life eternal, and not through a translator, but through our mediator, Jesus Christ. Yes, life that transends all types of lifes, cultures, languages, and experiences. We are one in HIM.
So even though we knew what was coming, we never said goodbye but we did say "hasta mostla."

Or in other words....
See you later.

Days Gone By…

DSCI0141 No photoshop here. We really look that stunning.  Seriously.

We have been spending our days up in the mountains.  Half the week we come back down to the valley every night, but the other half we just stay up there with some very dear friends.

There are so many stories to tell.  And those stories could fit any movie category you would like…thriller, comedy, horror, family.  I hope to share some of those stories here (eventually)  but I know some of those stories will only be shared audibly, with family and friends, or over the decades Ashlyn and I will sit down and recount these days, or some of the stories are just “the ones you tell your grandkids”

But we pray only eternity will tell all of these stories.  Of the lives that have been changed and the ripple effect that it has had. Yes.  Eternity will tell the whole story.

Is that frightening or encouraging?

And for now I say goodbye, because we will be staying up in the mountains for the next couple of weeks.  Next week we are having a kids camp, and then a missions team from my chapel is coming for a week, and then…well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Nos veamos.

Te tengo

Lord, I am fighting it….rage, anger, bitterness.  The urge to just run away.

I pen these thought in my journal and pause.  Wow.  That does not sound pretty.  But how true.  I am deciding what to do about someone who I feel has wronged me, but yet I do not want to go to that person because, I mean, what will the say?  What will they do?

As I sit, contemplating, “VAMOS!”  interrupts my precious alone time with my Savior.  “What?!  Already?  But Lord, don’t you know I need this time to stew?!”

But we leave anyways.  The morning is still new as we walk up a mountain to go visit a family.  They have prepared breakfast for us.  The air is crisp, but the sun begins to break through the clouds, warming the earth.  The whole way I say nothing but contemplate the injustice of my life, knowing what I needed to do, but asking God to let it be anything.but.that.

We maneuver the hill to find the young girls of the family playing as though there were no cares in the world.  I join them.  I look at the mid-morning sunlight dancing in young four-year-old Dani’s clear brown eyes.  Her face fills with glee.  I pick her up under her arms, swinging her back and forth between my legs.  She giggles with delight.  I throw her up in the air.  She grasps for my hands.  Claws and pinches my arms. The joy leaves with rapidity.  I pull her close to myself.  As she lays her head on my shoulder, breathing deeply, I say with a little smile, “Te tengo.  No  te precoupes. Confia en mi.”

My breath catches in my throat, my eyes mist, and my heart says, “That’s what it is, right Lord?”

I have you.  Don’t worry.  Trust in me.

Oh Lord, make me like a child again.

Picture. Picture.

IMG_0133 Remember when I said here, that a friend of mine was helping me develop children’s lessons?  Yes.  She was wonderful.  And still is.  But here is what we did and how it works.

I started developing picture stories for kids using some of the techniques I learned at The Ezekiel Project.   As a spring board I am using a little booklet called “Your Story”  that goes through and chronologically and logically tells the story of man and his relationship with the God of the universe.  I had wanted something simple and straightforward that offered a clear path into the gospel.  I mean, I know its possible to travel from "Daniel in the Lion’s Den” to the redeeming work of Christ, but considering my Spanish and that many times Spanish is the second language of my listeners, and sometimes I am translated, I wanted something that leads into the gospel without having to jump a few bushes to get there.   I also wanted lessons that could build on one another, because I most of the time I work with the same group of kids on a weekly bases.  However I also needed something that a one time listener could learn from as well and not be completely lost like if you watch one episode of the TV show LOST.

I had started sharing the stories using sketch paper and markers….having to redraw everything each time.  Then it was suggested that I draw the base to the stories, laminate them, use dry erase markers, wipe it clean, and then reuse.  That’s where my friend the artist comes in.  I am not been artistically gifted at all.  So she is doing all the drawing for me.  Each picture also has a bible verse that is related to the story so if given time, we can memorize it together and if not, then I show it to them during the story time.

We were together back in Georgia last week and worked on them together.  Since getting back here last Monday, I have used those little things every day, sometime more than once a day.  And it has been working great.  The kids are interested, I know were I am going, and we are all learning.

So far we have four lessons (which means I have told the same story a lot of times this week!)  and we hope to make enough to cover the entirety of the booklet.

….just to prove that we are alive and well.  The picture was taken a few hours ago while we were in a truck coming down the mountain.

And we are getting along. I only mention it because the last time Ashlyn and I lived together we were 15 and 17, that was not.quite.the.case.  Perhaps the years have done us well.

What an Honor

IMG_0092 Remember when I wrote a couple of times back about the fact that I was in the states enjoying time with my family?  And that there was more of it to come?  But I would write about it later?

Well people, later has arrived.   My sister came with me to Mexico. In fact, as I am writing this we are on the last leg of our 15-hour journey, sitting on a bus.  As life normally is, this was one of those only-God-could-have-done-this things.  Through various situations some ok and some ummm, not so pretty, God worked it out for her to come.  She had been planning on coming during the first week of April anyways for a missions trip….so we changed here leave date and she  will go back to the States with the mission team.  That gives her six weeks here.  Six glorious weeks.

Playing with kids, climbing mountains, experiencing a new culture… well two of them actually, two new languages, learning the bond of the body of Christ-not by words, but by actions.  In short viewing her God with different eyes and seeing this world has she never seen it before.

And I have the privilege of being on the front row watching it all.  What an honor.

Who I am

IMG_0087

I have a confession to make. Sometimes I find people just.plain.annoying. Especially when they “ask” for favors but yet expect for you to do it. It makes me want to demand, “Are you asking me? or are you telling me?!” One such circumstance happened last night, and all I could thing was, “Are you kidding me?!” And that was exactly what I said to my friends who were with me when I read the downright ridiculous request. I was not mad, but in fact found humor in the matter and went on to fulfill the request to the best of my ability. I was quite proud of myself too.

Until this morning. I read this…

“If the ultimate, the hardest, cannot be asked of me; if my fellows hesitate to ask it and turn to someone else, then I know nothing of Calvary love.” -Amy Carmichael

And I was humbled. Deeply humbled before my God. My haughty superior attitude. Disgusting.

And then my thoughts wandered to two very dear friends of mine who are here visiting for a couple of days. One knows worlds more about computers than I do so I passed over my laptop for a quick fix. As he worked diligently for hours, even putting some cash into the problem, his wife, an artist, worked with me on developing children’s lessons. We spent the evening working and chatting away, taking a break when the conversation turned to more serious matters. They told me time and time again how happy they were to be able to help me out in any way. Because they are my friends and because they love me, yes. But much more so for the love of their Savior.

So what did I do? Turned to my God and asked forgiveness for being how I am, asking Him to show me, convict me, and give me His love. But not only change how I see, but who I am.

Days of late...

Recent days find me back with the people who know the most horrendous things about me but yet happen to be the people who love me the most.
FAMILY

I will be going back to Mexico Monday, but I will be taking a bit of the family with me. Really cool story, but more on that later.

Saturday, February 20, 2010

Yeah.

Just by means of clarification: I do not live in a hut with dirt floors. However, I do go up into the mountains almost everyday into the homes of people who live with a dirt floor and sometimes I find myself staying there overnight for a few days or a week or two. And if you happened to visit me in Mexico and we came upon such a home without thought, I would say, "This is my friend, so-and so's house." Yeah...they are some of the loveliest people I know. No joke.
But I live in a valley area, which has a population that is rumored to be about 300,000. And has all modern convinces. Well, all but one that I have found....
A guy friend of mine was talking the other day about how hated to wash dishes. And then he asked, "Hey, isn't there something where you come from that is like a washing machine, but it washes dishes?!"
I only laughed.

wait and hope and turn it all

I know. I have not been around very much in this world called blogging. I would love to say that it that it is because I have been extremely busy...and I have been. But that has nothing to do with my absence here.
I have not been here because of what happens when I am here. I write. And always when I write I show my heart. Not saying that I am some amazing profound writer or anything, cause well, I know I am not. In fact most of the time I forget that there are readers out there. A few scant people who sometimes find the words that I write interesting.
But when I write it is for the sake of writing. When I start, I might have a general idea of what it might be about, but have no idea how it is going to shape up. Writing causes me to see things in a light that I had not seen them before. It gives me the time to think about things that I normally would push further down into the depths of my heart, because in just an ordinary moment when I am thinking, there are other, more important, more pressing things to be done. Writing opens me up in ways that few other things can.
And well, as of late, I have not wanted to show my heart. I have not been able to. Sometimes live is just hard. And painful. So very painful. And sometimes I have no idea how to handle it. Especially when it is from the hands of people. You want to react, shout, and cry "This IS NOT right!" I want to criticize, to point out faults, to have my time to speak. But that is not right either. Hence I have not written. Yes this is my place...to say what I think, to bear my heart, to talk about what I want, but I have to remember that no matter what world I am in, I am the daughter of the King....
And so I write to my King and I speak with Him. He knows my heart better than I do....He is the one who shows me what is there. The sin and the shame, yes. But also the creature that He is molding with His very own hands. This King is a man in whom I can trust everything....and so I do. And "He makes all things beautiful in HIS time." So I wait and hope and turn it all to Him.

Upwards and onwards...

I stop. Stand up straight, unfolding my back. I look up to a baby blue sky, shielding my eyes from the sunlight with my hands. Then I look around. So much green. Trees. Rolling Hills. Rocks. Houses dotting the side of the mountains. I look back and in doing so, my eyes wander downward. Down to where I had been, seeing how far and how high I had climbed. I looked forward and upward, not being able to see how far I had left to go. I sigh with a bit of discouragement. The thrill of hiking had long since left and I weariness was slowly taking over my body. The words, "Poco a poco; step by step" ring in my head. "Don't give up keep pressing forward." So I go. Keep climbing. I come across slippery rocks and mud. Both of which make the path unstable and unsure. I watch the feet of the person in front of me, thinking, "Step where they have stepped. Watch to see what is the best way to go." The sun hides behind the clouds and dusk sets in. Soon the person in front of me pulls out a flashlight. I do not have one. They swing hold the light down by their knee, swinging it back and forth, back and forth. In this, the light helps them and me. Now I am walking, only being able to see where I am half of the time, the other half I remember what the light showed me when it was there, repeating to myself, "Never doubt in the darkness what you have seen in the light." Still climbing. Then, without warning, I feel my foot slip, I know I'm going to fall. The hand of the person in front of me reaches back, grabbing my arm, keeping me from falling. They say, "Are you alright?! Don't you worry. I know the way. Hold my hand and you will not fall." I take a deep breath. All is ok. I say a silent prayer. And we continue on.

Oh Lord, how this is the story of my life. Struggling, questioning, reminding myself of precious truths along the way to keep myself going. Enough I say! I am ready for that deep breath that comes with the assurance of a strong hand. Lord I am willing to go where You want me to go and do what You want me to do, but please lead me by the hand. Better yet, carry me upwards and onwards. Further up and further in.

Lyrics.

I'm waiting
I'm waiting on You, Lord
And I am hopeful
I'm waiting on You, Lord
Though it is painful
But patiently, I will wait

I will move ahead, bold and confident
Taking every step in obedience
While I'm waiting
I will serve You
While I'm waiting
I will worship
While I'm waiting
I will not faint
I'll be running the race
Even while I wait

I'm waiting
I'm waiting on You, Lord
And I am peaceful
I'm waiting on You, Lord
Though it's not easy
But faithfully, I will wait
Yes, I will wait
I will serve You while I'm waiting
I will worship while I'm waiting
I will serve You while I'm waiting
I will worship while I'm waiting
I will serve you while I'm waiting
I will worship while I'm waiting on You, Lord

I really should write. I need to write. I enjoy expressing my thoughts through written word. And I like being able to look back at this thing called my blog and see what has happened in my life. Looking back and remembering. Tis grand. But I have been busy and gone from internet access and just do not know where to start up again. So much has happened that I just do not know where to begin. I suppose I will just dive in see where I end up. That's what I normally do anyways. It may not all make sense, but since when do I make perfect sense?
I had the opportunity to stay up in the mountains for a couple of weeks. And I jumped on it. I live in the valley that supports the mountains surrounding it. The missionaries here go up into the mountains six days a week to work with the people there. But some the the places take two or three hours to get to, so sometimes they stay up in the mountains for a week or two to work more closely with the people there. These past few weeks was on the those times. And oh how I enjoyed it. Spending time with these people is always a great joy, but to be with them day in and day out was wonderful....knowing them, learning about their lives, praying and working together. Yes, the language is a barrier, especially because many of them do not speak Spanish, and while my Spanish is progressing, it is far from flawless. It reminded me again how grateful I am for the work of Christ on the cross.....not only is salvation available to all, but the work of the cross breaks through and liberates from any language or cultural barrier.
So I am learning, growing, and loving my Lord. Not always an easy process, but who got us started on thinking "The easier the better"? No, no, no. The blessed the best.

And that's all I got to say folks.

Words

There are some words in Spanish that once I have found out what they literally mean, I love them or at least find them intriguing. For example:
Esperar: The verb "to wait" but also the verb "to hope"....to hope is to wait and to wait is to hope.
De nada: How you say "you're welcome" in Spanish, but literally means "of nothing". Like "Don;;t worry about it. It was nothing."
Hacer: The verb for "to do" and also the verb for "to make".... This one I only find interesting. Not sure why.
Lo siento: How you would say "I am sorry" but it literally means "I feel it". Like, "I feel what you are going through. Your pain. It is not just something that you have to deal with alone, I feel it too." It is kinda cheesy, but a common joke here is when someone says that their head hurts, and you say "I feel it" that they respond with, "Yes, but I feel it much more".

There are more, but these are the ones that I could think of off the top of my head.
